Unified Security Integration for a Premier Washington, DC Office Complex

CLIENT SNAPSHOT

Industry:   Commercial Real Estate / Class A Office
Location:   Washington, DC
Project Type:   Full Security Systems Integration
Systems Involved:   Access Control · CCTV · Audio Analytics · Weapons Detection · IP/SIP Intercom

The Challenge

A prominent industry leader managing a Class A office complex in Washington, DC approached Datawatch Systems with a clear objective: elevate their building’s security infrastructure to match the expectations of a high-profile tenant base and deliver a more intelligent, proactive security environment.

The client’s existing systems — access control, video surveillance, and intercom — were each performing their individual functions, but operating in isolation. Leadership recognized that to truly serve their tenants and protect the property at the highest level, those systems needed to work together as a single, unified platform capable of intelligent, automated response.

The goal was not simply to upgrade equipment — it was to build a security ecosystem where every system communicates, every alert triggers a defined action, and security personnel are empowered to respond with speed and confidence.

The Datawatch Solution

Datawatch designed and deployed a fully integrated security platform built on the Milestone Video Management System (VMS) as the central operational hub, with Datawatch’s access control system serving as the authoritative system of record. Every component — cameras, audio sensors, weapons detection, intercoms, and access control — feeds into a single environment with defined, automated workflows.

The Outcome

The client’s security infrastructure was transformed from a collection of disconnected legacy systems into a fully integrated, analytics-driven platform. Security personnel now operate from a single interface, supported by AI-assisted detection capabilities that feed directly into structured, escalation-ready alarm workflows.

Key outcomes include:
  • All five SI Global assessment recommendations addressed within a single project scope
  • Unified operator experience — one platform for video, access, audio analytics, weapons detection, and intercom
  • Edge-based video analytics and AI weapons detection operating across the full camera footprint
  • 24/7 escalation pathway to the Datawatch Monitoring Center fully configured
  • Fully redundant lobby workstations eliminating operational single points of failure
Deep System Integration & Automated Alert Workflows

The core of this deployment is not simply that multiple systems share a screen — it is that they actively communicate and trigger one another. When an event occurs, Milestone serves as the intelligence layer that determines what happens next.

When an access control alert is generated — an invalid credential attempt, a door held open, or a forced entry — Milestone immediately pulls up the associated camera view at the guard station and logs the event with a timestamped bookmark. The on-site guard receives the alert in a structured alarm queue and has the ability to review live and recorded video, acknowledge the event, and clear it — all before any escalation occurs.

If the guard does not respond within a defined timeframe, or if the event is classified at a severity level that warrants immediate escalation, the alarm is automatically routed to the Datawatch 24/7 Monitoring Center. Monitoring Center operators receive the full event context — camera feeds, access logs, and event history — and initiate the appropriate response protocol, including two-way communication with on-site personnel.

For the highest-severity events, the system supports automated outputs including building lockdown sequences, activation of strobes and sirens, and automated call routing to designated contacts or emergency services — all triggered without requiring manual intervention from the guard post.

The guard-first escalation model is a critical design principle: on-site staff have the opportunity to verify and clear an alarm before it reaches the monitoring center, reducing false escalations while ensuring genuine threats receive an immediate, coordinated response.

Camera Infrastructure & Edge-Based Analytics

Over 50 cameras were upgraded to 5MP and 8MP Axis devices, repositioned to align with specific detection scenarios rather than legacy general-visibility placement. A Milestone Husky appliance with 144TB of storage supports high-resolution recording across the full system. Edge-based Axis analytics — crowd gathering detection, cross-line and directional movement, people counting, and vehicle-in-pedestrian-area detection — operate directly on the cameras at no additional licensing cost, feeding events into the Milestone alarm workflow in real time.

Redundant Guard Workstations & Display Expansion

Two fully standardized guard workstations — each equipped with three monitors — were installed so that either station can serve as the primary post without capability gaps. Dedicated screens for the alarm queue, live video, and system controls allow officers to manage simultaneous events without toggling between applications, directly improving response time during active incidents.

IP/SIP Intercom Integration

Three new IP-based SIP intercoms replaced the legacy analog system, fully integrated into Milestone VMS. When a visitor initiates an intercom call, the associated camera view is automatically presented to the guard, the call is logged as a Milestone event, and the guard can grant or deny access — all from a single interface. Every interaction is time-stamped and stored as part of the unified audit trail.

Audio Analytics & AI Weapons Detection

Sound Intelligence audio analytics — including gunshot detection and aggression/elevated voice detection — were deployed via Axis T6112 MK II audio modules across 33 locations throughout the building’s first-floor interior and garage elevator lobbies. When an audio event is detected, Milestone automatically bookmarks the incident, triggers the nearest camera views at the guard station, and generates an alert in the alarm queue.

AI-based visual weapons detection via Omnilert was deployed across 21 strategically selected camera locations covering entrances, lobbies, and high-traffic areas. Upon detection of a visible firearm, an immediate alert is pushed into Milestone, camera feeds are called up automatically, and — based on configured severity — the event can trigger automated lockdown outputs and direct escalation to the Datawatch Monitoring Center without waiting for guard acknowledgment.
